The death of Jim Rohn was felt throughout the globe at the end of of 2009. Having traveled around the globe for over 30 years, Jim Rohn was definitely a world-renowned figure and inspiration to millions of individuals from every walk of life.
If you have not heard Jim Rohn speak I can only say youre missing out. Unfortunately, I never was able to sit in on one of his seminars before Jim Rohn died. But, I have, and you have access to his years of labor, wisdom, motivation, and inspiration through his various recorded teachings. I know his self improvement resources have served me well in my brief personal development journey.
Who is Jim Rohn?
Simply put, Jim Rohn is known for his ability to communicate to others the lessons he has learned through life and from his rags to riches story. He pretty much describes himself as a loser when he was in his early twenties, and it disgusted him. He minces no words when he says he was living well within his potential. I believe most people today do just this. But the inspirational Jim Rohn started in network marketing with his mentor “John” Earl Shoaff and he was never the same. Earl Shoaff taught him about life, philosophy, work, business, and how to think. In short, he catapulted Rohn onto the high road of life change.
Lessons on Life
And life change is exactly what Jim Rohn teaches about. He covers it all really, and he calls them the 5 major pieces to the life puzzle, which also happens to be the title of one of his books. Perhaps the most striking message Jim Rohn can impress upon all of us are his ideas on personal philosophy. He calls our philosophy the set of the sail, and life is simply the wind. We all have control of our own sails, but not the wind. Yet, the same wind blows on all of us.
Now, I have studied quite a bit of philosophy and psychology, but reading Jim Rohn books taught me far more about how to actually live a better, happier life in a much more concise form than any other book I can think of. To put it bluntly, Jim Rohn changed my life in some incredible ways.
I believe we can all learn a lot from studying Jim Rohn, as well as his mentor Earl Shoaff. Even though I have listened to his audio CDs, watched a few of his DVDs, and read a ton of material about Jim Rohn, I still learn from him. A specific Jim Rohn video I have I have watched and taken notes numerous times, but I still know that if I turned it on right now I am confident I could pick up a new lesson or insight. In basic terms, Jim Rohn rose to and lived the successful life that many of us dream about; and hes gone on to teach others how to do it. All of this is only part of the reason they call him the mentor of mentors.

We’ve all been there. We get excited about some major new goal in our life, we get all fired up about making it happen, and then… zilch. Nothing happens. The very lives that we want to improve via our personal development and self improvement efforts get in our way, and our dreams of success on a massive scale fall by the wayside.
This is especially common when it comes to financial success or weight loss, and that is probably due to the fact that attaining financial stability or sustained weight loss are both things that take an on-going and consistent effort over the long-term.
The key to pulling yourself out of this self improvement slump is to find ways to once again become passionate about whatever it was that you wanted to accomplish in the first place.
A lot of people decide on some sort of personal development or self improvement program after a negative experience, and their goal becomes not wanting to experience that same type of situation again.
However, is NOT wanting something to happen really a strong enough motivation to keep yourself on track over the long-term so that you can attain the opposite of that thing?
For example, if you decide that you are finally going to get your finances together because you almost got kicked out of your apartment for not paying the rent, or you walked to work for 2 weeks until you could afford to get your car fixed, both of those experiences are pretty powerful motivators.
However, once you are back inside the comfort zone of having enough money to pay the bills, and your car is running fine, where is the motivation to achieve financial freedom that will keep you burning the midnight oil and working weekends in order to make that happen?
Another example is weight loss. If someone makes fun of you or if you have some other negative experience as a result of the fact that you are overweight, you’ll have your brand-new exercise and weight loss program planned out before you even get home that day!
However, after the pain of that incident fades, or you find some way to temporarily fill the emotional gap in your life that in the past has been empty as a result of your health, your motivation to workout 5 or 6 days each week and to eat healthy foods also fades away.
So, the key to keeping your motivational fires burning lies in finding ways to continually be as passionate about attaining your goals as you were when you first decided to do so.
One possible method for doing this could be to mentally relive the time in your life that caused you to decide to make changes in the first place. However, that definitely smacks of “living in the past” as well as “focusing on the negative” so a more proactive approach would probably serve you better.
Instead of thinking back on bad times that caused you to want to make positive changes in your life, why not envision future good times instead?
What would your life be like if you had more than enough money to pay your rent or your mortgage each month, you had 2 or 3 nice cars in the driveway, all of your expenses were covered, and you still had “play” money left over?
Consistent and repeated visualization of what your life will be like when money is no longer an issue will keep you motivated to do what it takes in order to achieve that financial success.
The same process can be used for weight loss or any other area of your life that you want to improve. Put powerful and emotional pictures in your mind of the life that you will lead once you have achieved your dreams, and focus intensely on those images as often as you can – preferably several times each day.
The key to this process is consistency. It has already been shown that humans have the ability – indeed, the very habit – of getting motivated about their dreams, but then not following through. If you do not consistently dream about and feel passionate about your desires, you will simply fall right back into the same trap that has already kept you from attaining success.
There is a saying that goes something along the following lines, and you would do well to put this somewhere that you will see it often. Paste it up where you will see it during the parts of your day when you have the most difficulty sticking to your success plan:
“Do today what others won’t, so you can do tomorrow what others can’t.”
Winners and successful people do whatever it takes day in and day out, month after month, and year after year in order to achieve success.
Do you want to be a winner, or do you want to just let yourself fall back into another self improvement slump?

“I can have a really great day, but when I wake up the next morning I feel anxious. Sometimes the better day I’ve had, the more anxious I am the next morning. I can’t figure it out.”
I hear this over and over from my clients. What is happening here?

The Tyranny of the Ego Wounded Self

All of us have a wounded part of us that we created when we were young to try to get love, avoid pain, and feel safe. This part of us is housed in a peanut sized part of our left-brain called the amygdala. Within the amygdala is all of our programmed false beliefs – the conclusions we drew from our experiences as we were growing up, or the ideas we were taught by parents, siblings, teachers, media, religion, peers, and so on. This is our ego – our wounded self.

When we are young and not receiving the love we need, we decide that it must be our fault that we are not being loved. We decide that we are not good enough – that were are somehow flawed, inadequate, bad – that there is something wrong with us. This is one of the major false beliefs of the wounded self.

Once we decide this, we learn to hide away who we really are and we go about developing a self that is acceptable. The more we do this, the more we lose touch with who we really are. We come to believe that we are our ego wounded self – that we are the self we created, not the Self that God created. Over time, the ego gains more and more power, and very much doesn’t want to lose this power. Our ego wounded self becomes addicted to being in control.

Like a dictator who doesn’t want to be toppled, our wounded self fears losing its power. The more inner work we do to heal our limiting beliefs and move into the truth of who we are, the more our ego wounded self is threatened. The one time it can exert its power is when we are asleep. So it often take over while we are asleep and we wake up with the thoughts of our wounded self that create anxiety. Being asleep, we do not have the wherewithal to limit these thoughts. We might be totally unaware of the thoughts that create the anxiety because we are half-asleep, but when we wake up, we experience theanxiety of the lies that the wounded self is telling us.

In fact, the more growth you do, the more you might wake up with anxiety, as the wounded self becomes more and more threatened of losing power. What to do?

The Way Out of Anxiety

What often happens is that we get hooked into ruminating about the very thoughts that are creating the anxiety, thus becoming more and more anxious. We may try to explore why we are having these thoughts that are making us feel bad, which only seems to exacerbate the anxiety.

Focusing on these thoughts is NOT the way out!

The way out is to consciously and deliberately focus on what you are grateful for.Gratitude dispels the power of the wounded self, so the more you focus on gratitude, then better you will feel.

Try it for yourself. Instead of trying to figure out what the anxiety is about, or what you are thinking, or why you are thinking what you are thinking, move into gratitude instead. Be thankful for the day, for another opportunity to learn and grow and share love with whomever you encounter. Be thankful for your life, for the journey of the soul, for the sacred privilege of evolving your soul in love. Be thankful for the big and small things in your life that you might be overlooking.

Then notice how you feel!

An open mind is like an open well. It is easily contaminated by anything blowing in the wind. At least that is the problem with what many call an open mind. For example, you may have heard someone called open minded because he believes in visitors from space, bending spoons with mind power, and “remote viewing.” But isn’t this more a sign of a gullible mind? Let’s look at a healthier definition.
Open Mind – A Definition
We all like to think that we are open minded. Here is what that means according to a couple different dictionaries: 1. Receptive to new and different ideas or the opinions of others; 2. Not narrow or conservative in thought, expression, or conduct.
That sounds reasonable, and we might want to fit those definitions. The problem comes when we take this to mean that we must entertain any idea regardless of merit, or that believing in unlikely things is a sign of open-mindedness. Then we begin to give too much credit to faulty ideas and unsupportable beliefs in the name of having an open mind.
For example, I watched a program on crop circles the other day. These are circles and other geometric shapes of flattened crops that appear in fields around the world. For years many speculated that spaceships from other planets, “energy vortexes” and other outrageous things caused them. “Experts” claimed that they could not have been caused by humans. Much of the public bought into this hype in the name of having an open mind.
Of course when several individuals and groups finally claimed responsibility, and even showed exactly how they made the designs, they were ignored by many. Some people didn’t have an open mind after all -at least not open to the most likely scenario. They wanted a particular answer (space aliens) or wanted the mystery to be maintained. To this day the tricksters make their designs only to have paranormal “experts” tromp into the fields the following day and proclaim that no human could have done it.
Note that being curious about the mystery, and speculating about possible causes is not the problem. Being “receptive to new and different ideas” is a good thing. Adopting beliefs without supporting evidence may not be, however. Being receptive to the idea that previously unknown forces can cause things to happen is open minded, but it would also be very closed-minded to exclude the possibility that there are more normal explanations – especially when the bulk of the evidence points to this.
So what does it mean to have an open mind? To be receptive to new ideas and to avoid narrowness of thought, certainly. But being open minded doesn’t mean we have to accept ideas that make no sense, or adopt beliefs without any evidence or reason. And it has to mean at least that we are open to the possibility that the explanations we would like or which are more interesting may be wrong.
You have a brain that can analyze various possible explanations for things. An open mind may assure you that you consider all those possibilities, but it shouldn’t prevent you from discarding those explanations without evidence in favor of those with evidence. In other words, it should never be an excuse to believe anything in the absence of good thinking.

Depending on what your definition of “self improvement” is, you probably have some informed – or uninformed – ideas about what it is going to take for you to make positive changes in your life.
In fact, you may even have wondered to yourself if you truly have what it takes in order to attain your goals. After all, if it was easy, you would have already done it, right?
Picture the following scenarios, if you will:
1) You put your hand on a hot stove and get burned. It hurts bad, so you do it again.
2) You get into a car accident and receive fairly serious injuries because you didn’t have your seatbelt on. The next time you get in your car, you DON’T put your seatbelt on.
3) You go out partying with your friends, drink too much tequila, end up getting in a fight, spending the night in jail, getting violently ill, and leaving the whole experience with several scars and a healthy court fee. The next night you go out again, and order…tequila.
4) You fall asleep in the sun and get a worse sunburn than you have ever had. You actually have blisters on some parts of your body. You go back to the beach the next day, and don’t even wear any sunscreen.
Okay, by now there may be a certain term that is running around your head that would describe the actions of the person who would do any of the things that were just described. Something along the lines of… STUPID.
You might rephrase it to be something more politically correct like “misguided,” or “confused,” but regardless of which term you decide upon, the end result is the same:
Doing things that cause unpleasant circumstances to come into your life, and then repeating those things over and over again is simply not very intelligent.
If your neighbor’s dog bit you the last time you went into your neighbor’s yard, would you walk into your neighbor’s yard again?
If a certain substance caused you to have a severe and almost deadly allergic reaction the last time you used it, would you use it again anyway?
Those are obviously extreme examples, but by now you should be starting to see the point.
As intelligent human beings, we have the ability to look back on the experiences that we have had in our lives, and to not repeat events that have brought us negativity.
Which brings us to the million-dollar question:
Why do we continually repeat the behavior that in the past has been shown time and time again to not get us what we want out of life?
You don’t have to use the word stupid at this point if you don’t want to, but you do have to admit that repeating ineffective behavior is not the most intelligent way to be effective.
Why do you keep doing it, then? If starting and then stopping your weight loss program has repeatedly not led to permanent weight loss, why do you keep starting and stopping it?
If working at the type of job that you are comfortable working at has not brought you the career and/or financial success that you want, why do you keep working at that type of job?
If dating the same type of people has continually resulted in failed relationships and broken hearts, why do you keep dating those types of people?
Do you see the pattern here? Can you clearly follow the logic that by doing the same things that you have always done, you will simply continue to get what you have always gotten?
Yet here you are. You are reading this article because you are interested in self improvement, yet you have most likely repeated behavior similar to the patterns described earlier.
Are you thinking that the “human condition” is going to change in some manner that will allow your previously ineffective methods to somehow magically now have different results?
Do you think that without changing your inner-thoughts about weight loss, financial success, or relationships, that you will be able to find success in those areas where you have previously been unable to?
No, is the obvious answer here, and unlike other self improvement articles, this piece is probably not leaving you feeling very uplifted or empowered.
That’s okay! Were you looking for an article that was going to tell you what you wanted to hear, or an article that was actually going tell you the truth?
Well, here is the truth: If you want to make positive changes in your life where you have been unable to in the past, you are going to have to do things differently than you have done them in the past.
If you will allow a quote from the James Bond movie Casino Royale, chew on this:
“You have a choice. Just because you’ve done it before doesn’t mean that you need to do it again.”
You’re smart. Does that quote make sense to you?

The Wake   When William learned that he was being fired for laziness and inefficiency, he went to see the head of human resources.  "Since I've been with the firm for so long," he said, " I think I deserve at least a letter of recommendation." The human resources director agreed and said he'd have the letter that next day.  The following morning, William found the letter on his desk.  It read: "William worked for our company for eleven years. When he left us, we were very satisfied."   What happened to William? Why did he lose the fire? Maybe he needs to be in a wake. Puzzled? Want to know what I mean? Well I got this idea from an unknown author who came up this beautiful piece:   One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big sign on the door on which was written: Yesterday, the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the wake in the room that has been prepared in the gym. In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.   The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room. The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up. Everyone thought: 'Who is this guy who was hindering my progress? Well, at least he died! One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it, they suddenly became speechless.   They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.  There was a mirror inside the coffin; everyone who looked inside it could see himself.  There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:  There is only one person who is capable of setting limits to your growth: IT IS YOU!!!!! Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parents change, when your husband or wife change, when your company change, when your church changes, when your location change, when your money change, when your status change...   Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs. Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses. Be a winner; build yourself and your reality. It's the way you face Life that makes the difference. Many people are slightly motivated only by the tiny pay slips they receive every 15th and the 30th of the month. The days in between are struggles to get by and the drive to improve and achieve better things has died. The wake is a need to shock us back to reality Life is never what happens. it’s always how you deal with what happens. Work is a blessing and a gift from God. If you don’t believe me ask those who are jobless. Be productive and unleash the potential in you that has been lying dormant for so many years. Never forget. The largest room in the world is the room for self-improvement.

From Failure to Gratitude - Story of Former Pres Abraham Lincoln

At the age of seven, a young boy and his family were forced out of their home, and the boy was forced to go to work. When the boy was nine, his mother passed away. He had a job as a store clerk, but lost it when he was twenty. The young man wanted to go to law school, but had no education. He went into debt when he was twenty-three, to become a partner in a small store. It was only three years later that his business partner died, and left him with a debt that took years for him to repay.
He dated a girl for four years and, at the age of twenty-eight, decided to ask her to marry him. She turned him down. Thirty-seven years into his life, he was elected to Congress... on his THIRD try. He then failed to be re-elected. This man's son died when he was only four years old. At age forty-five, he ran for the Senate...and failed to be elected. He persisted at politics and ran for the vice-presidency at age forty-seven, and again lost. Finally, at the age of fifty-one, this man was elected President of the United States. His name was Abraham Lincoln.
And then, President Lincoln did a very unusual thing. In the midst of the darkest day in American history, in the midst of the Civil War which claimed more American lives than any other war, in the midst of great trial and tragedy, President Lincoln issued the following proclamation: "It has seemed to me fit and proper that [the gifts of God] should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens . . . to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
Abraham Lincoln had a grateful heart. He knew, that even in the midst of great tribulation and hardship, there was much to be thankful for. And he took the time to express his gratitude to God, and invited the American people to join him in giving thanks to the Holy One.
